One thing should jump out at you quickly: the median H-1B
compensation at Netflix is twice as high as at different firms. Why would that
be? A job-by-job breakdown uncovers that, in 2020, Netflix has been eager to
pay huge pay rates for senior research scientists and software engineers—as
much as $600,000 for a computer graphic design pipeline lead and a senior
software engineer, for instance.
Netflix has gained a reputation for paying
higher-than-average pay rates, and it appears as though this applies with
regards to H-1B. "To assist us with drawing in and hold stunning partners,
we pay workers at the highest point of their own market," reads a note on
the organization's site. "We make a decent faith estimate of the most
elevated pay every worker could make at peer firms, and pay them that
greatest."
However, even at different firms, the median H-1B pay is
well into six figures; compare that with the "average" tech
compensation of $94,000 (as indicated by Dice's 2020 Tech Salary Report). In
theory, these compensation numbers are with regards to the H-1B program's the original mission, which is to get exceptionally specialized talent from abroad that
organizations can't find locally.
